Robbie Coltrane, a veteran Scottish actor who played half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in

the Harry Potter films and starred in the cult British crime series Cracker,

died Friday in Larbert, Scotland. I was 72 years old.

His death at the hospital was confirmed by British agent Belinda Wright.

Wright said Coltrane's family had not said why,

but he had "been unwell for some time."

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling,

who decades ago said Coltrane would be the first choice to play Hagrid,

said Friday that he was "an incredible talent and one of a kind."

"I am incredibly lucky to have known and worked with him," she wrote.
